"In older versions of Apple’s OS X, when you used your fingers to scroll up and down the trackpad, you scrolled down on the trackpad in order to scroll down in a document or Web page. That seemed to make sense to longtime users, because you were using your trackpad in the same way you would use a mouse to control the scroll bar at the right edge of a window—you pulled down on the scroll bar in order to move down in the document. This meant that when you scrolled down on the trackpad or scroll bar, the text and graphics contained in the window moved upward—in the opposite direction from your gesture. Everyone was accustomed to this behavior, but it doesn’t make sense in a multitouch environment, where the gestures you make with your fingers are supposed to act as if they’re manipulating a solid object—for example, you pinch on the trackpad in order to reduce the size of the object on screen.
OS X 10.7 Lion, by default, reverses the old scrolling behavior."

i thought was going crazy with the scrolling! augh, it makes sense now.
